Journal Club March

The Journal Club is a little late this month, but there are still some exciting papers published in February.

  1. The paper in the appendix was not published in February but is nevertheless interesting. I haven’t had full-text access yet, but I received it from Italy 🙂 J Cosmet Dermatol 2022
  2. Plasma is becoming increasingly important in cancer research. There were some exciting articles on this last month:
    1. Rationales of Cold Plasma Jet Therapy in Skin Cancer https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11840413/, a review by Bekeschus et.al. on the subject – I’m not sure whether the miniFlatPlaSter counts as an “uncertified device” (but a paper of mine from my doctoral days is cited 😄)
    2. https://physicsworld.com/a/low-temperature-plasma-halves-cancer-recurrence-in-mice/ A paper that could even reduce the rate of melanoma recurrence in mice using CAP.

(There were other in vitro papers but it would be too long to list them all – please ask if you are interested)

  1. There were also several papers on promoting wound healing, which I found very interesting. In general, the understanding of how plasma works is increasing: ( warning, the papers are very “biological” 😄 , I have not summarized them as they are mainly about pathways and cell modulation, so the papers essentially say that you are again contributing a small building block to understanding how it works)

  1. There was also something for scars, derma and cosmetic applications:
    1. Subcytotoxic transepidermal delivery using low intensity cold atmospheric plasma https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-024-83201-0

This study demonstrated that low-intensity CAP treatment enhances transepidermal permeation of hEGF, apparently via both paracellular and transcellular routes. Under our study conditions, LICAP treatment seems to be a novel approach to facilitate transepidermal drug delivery with low safety concerns in vitro. Further translational studies are needed for clinical evaluation.

Nice case study from Thailand on acne with an unknown device.
